As a first step in analyzing arthropod leg designs for pertinence to walking machine legs the authors examine segment length relationships and mobility of the body-leg system. All spiders have a single, highly conserved leg design, whereas insect legs are more specialized. This specialization has resulted in less system mobility than for spiders so that insects require position control for fewer joints.<>
