Vehicle platoons have been proven to have the capacity to enhance safety, improve highway utility and increase fuel economy via V2V communication. In order to deal with different maneuvers in practical applications, each vehicle in the platoon needs to adopt an extendable maneuver management framework to execute management strategies of various maneuvers. This paper introduces a two-dimensional maneuver management framework on the basis of the proposed hierarchical architecture for the platoon control system. Maneuvers and roles are two dimensions, based on which the management strategies are decoupled. This makes the proposed framework applicable to different maneuvers in practical applications as well as different roles in the platoon. Furthermore, two typical maneuvers are selected for case studies to illustrate how the framework works. Finally, a comprehensive simulation scenario integrating seven different maneuvers is designed. Results show that the proposed two-dimensional framework could effectively deal with various maneuvers including emergency maneuvers.
