A Human-In-The-loop (HITL) simulation was conducted to examine a new concept called Cockpit Display of Traffic Information (CDTI) Assisted Pilot Procedure (CAPP). With CAPP, the controller issues a no-closer-than (NCT) spacing distance to the flight crew, who then makes spacing judgments relative to a Traffic To Follow (TTF) aircraft using information provided on the CDTI during final approach. The flight crew manages aircraft speed to stay at or outside of that spacing value until a transition to visual separation occurs and a reduction in spacing is expected. The purpose of the simulation was to determine the feasibility and operational acceptability of CAPP and the necessary display elements. The simulation was conducted with air traffic controllers and pilots. Selected pilot results are presented in this paper. Overall, the results indicate pilot acceptability of, and ability to conduct, CAPP, including the ability to remain at or outside the NCT value. The displays were reported as providing the necessary information. Recommendations are made for CAPP operations and display requirements.
