The Er:As/sub 2/S/sub 3/ glass exhibits strong fluorescence from a group of distinct and narrow lines in the 1500-1600 nm band when pumped in the 980 or 810 nm bands. This emission band is characteristic of the transitions expected for Er/sup 3+/ ions. Pumping in the 810 nm band also excites emission in the 980 nm band. The PL and PLE spectra shown exhibits complex narrow line structure with multiplicities and line widths which are on the same order as the spectra found in crystalline material such as Er:YAG.<>
