Foreword: Considerable work has been accomplished and reported in the recent literature which leads toward a better quantitative understanding of wave forces on piling. In order for the designer, however, to more fully interpret and apply empirically derived force coefficients for piling design, he should have as complete a picture as possible relative to the spectrum of values possible for these coefficients under the given design wave conditions. This technical memorandum includes a theoretical study of the statistical distribution functions of wave forces on a circular cylindrical pile. The distribution is derived from distribution functions for ocean waves, and the mathematically derived relations are compared with field data using wave forces on circular cylindrical piles measured at an exposed location near Davenport, California. This report was prepared for the Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory of the University of California at Berkeley in pursuance of contract DA-49-055-civ-eng-63-8 with the Beach Erosion Board (now the Coastal Engineering Research Center). This contract provided in part for the study of wave forces on coastal structures. The author of the report, Leon E. Borgman, was an Assistant Professor of Mathematics, University of California at Davis.
