The development of alluvial streams for navigation involves the solution of many problems that have to be considered by the design engineer. Most of the problems are concerned with the movement of sediment and the development of currents that would not be hazardous or detrimental to navigation. Solution of sedimentation problems requires a knowledge of the general characteristics of the stream and of the principles involved in river sedimentation processes. Changes in discharge and stages produce changes in currents and sediment movement that render the application and development of design principles extremely difficult. Because of the many variables involved, experimenting with the river is expensive and generally inconclusive. River models have contributed materially to a better understanding of the processes involved in river development, and to the factors that should be considered in the design of regulating and training structures and in the development of general and specific plans. Some of the principles recently developed from model studies and analysis of field data are presented and discussed. These principles are concerned with the movement of sediment, design of structures for the solution of many of the problems, and factors to be considered in layout and design of lock and dam structures.
