An example brake monitoring system for bicycles comprises at least one force sensing element (FSE) for detecting brake pressure. The FSE may be attached to either a brake lever or a brake pad. A component connects to the FSE and reads force data, and includes a custom PCB, a connector, a battery connector, and resistors for logging and storing brake pressure data in non-volatile storage, or relaying it to a remote system using wireless or wired communication. The system also includes a display device to receive and display brake pressure data. The FSE for brake levers, FSE for brake pads, components, and display devices work together to monitor and display brake pressure data. This system has numerous applications in cycling, including training, safety research, bike design improvement, event organization, bike rental monitoring, and city planning.
