The present invention relates to an enigma system for decoding a user's environment. The system is activated using hand/finger movements and/or voice commands that signal the system to select an item in the user's environment and perform predefined information searches in the local or remote database to located information about the item of interest. The user movements may be detected by an imaging device to eliminate the need for structure to be associated with a user's hand. The enigma system can monitor the user's environment and automatically provide selectable information about the user's environment and provide warnings allowing a user to better “decoded” his environment.
