The transportation refrigeration unit (26) comprises: a compressor (58) configured to compress a refrigerant; a compressor motor (60) configured to drive the compressor (58); an evaporator heat exchanger (76) operatively coupled to the compressor (58); an energy storage device (62) for providing power to the compressor motor (60); and an evaporator fan (96) configured to provide return airflow (134) from a return air intake (136) and flow the return airflow (134) over the evaporator heat exchanger (76), wherein the return airflow (134) thermodynamically adjusts a temperature of the energy storage device (62).
