The present invention provides an apparatus and a method for balancing parallel-connected battery packs. The present invention, if a pack voltage deviation of a first to an n^th battery pack exceeds a first threshold value, performs a pack balancing operation based on the unit of each of the battery packs by setting a cell voltage, corresponding to a preset reference among overall cell voltages, as a pack balancing target voltage, and operating an electric discharge circuit connected to a battery cell with a voltage higher than the pack balancing target voltage. In addition, the present invention, if the pack voltage deviation becomes equal to or less than the first threshold value during the pack balancing, performs a cell balancing operation on the unit of each of the battery packs by identifying a battery pack of which cell voltage deviation exceeds a second threshold value, setting a cell voltage, corresponding to a preset reference among voltages of cells included in the identified battery pack, as a cell balancing target voltage and operating an electric discharge circuit connected to a battery cell with a voltage higher than the cell balancing target voltage. The present invention performs the pack balancing and the cell balancing complementarily, thereby reducing damage to electric parts and battery cells due to an in-rush current.

    본 발명은, 병렬 연결된 배터리 팩의 밸런싱 장치 및 방법을 개시한다. 본 발명에 따르면, 제1 내지 제n배터리 팩의 팩 전압 편차가 제1임계값을 초과하면, 전체 셀 전압 중에서 미리 설정된 기준에 대응되는 셀 전압을 팩 밸런싱 목표 전압으로 설정하고, 팩 밸런싱 목표 전압보다 전압이 높은 배터리 셀과 연결된 방전 회로를 동작시켜 팩 밸런싱 동작을 각각의 배터리 팩 단위에서 진행한다. 또한, 팩 밸런싱이 진행되는 동안 팩 전압 편차가 제1임계값 이하가 되면, 셀 전압 편차가 제2임계값을 초과하는 배터리 팩을 식별하고, 식별된 배터리 팩에 포함된 셀들의 전압 중에서 미리 설정된 기준에 대응되는 셀 전압을 셀 밸런싱 목표 전압으로 설정하고, 셀 밸런싱 목표 전압보다 전압이 높은 배터리 셀과 연결된 방전 회로를 동작시켜 셀 밸런싱 동작을 각각의 배터리 팩 단위에서 진행한다. 본 발명은 팩 밸런싱과 셀 밸런싱을 상호 보완적으로 실시함으로써 인-러쉬 전류에 의한 전장 부품의 손상과 배터리 셀의 손상을 저감시킬 수 있다.
