The present invention provides an apparatus for operating a pedestrian detection and collision mitigation system (PDCMS) of a vehicle, capable of recognizing a pedestrian by analyzing an image in front of the vehicle and protecting the pedestrian by operating a PDCMS function. The apparatus includes: a front detection sensor configured to detect a pedestrian in a driving lane of the vehicle and a distance and a relative speed between the pedestrian and the vehicle; a vehicle sensor configured to detect a speed of the vehicle; a controller configured to execute the PDCMS function based on information detected by the front detection sensor and the vehicle sensor; and a warning unit operated by the controller to provide a notification to a driver regarding a collision of the pedestrian with the vehicle. The front detection sensor includes: an image input unit configured to acquire an image of an area at a front of the vehicle; an ROI setting unit configured to set a region of interest (ROI) that corresponds to a size of an object in the image; a candidate extraction unit configured to extract a pedestrian candidate based on a movement of the object in the set ROI; and a pedestrian determination unit configured to compare the extracted pedestrian candidate with a posture of a sample pedestrian in a database to identify whether the extracted pedestrian candidate corresponds to the pedestrian. The PDCMS function includes activating an operation of the warning unit and activating an operation of a brake regardless of whether the driver operates the brake.

    본 발명은 자동차의 주행차선 상 보행자의 존재, 보행자의 자동차에 대한 거리 및 상대 속도를 감지하는 전방 감지 센서, 자동차의 속도를 감지하는 차량 센서, 전방 감지 센서와 차량 센서에서 감지한 정보를 기반으로 PDCMS(Pedestrian Detection and Collision Mitigation System) 기능을 작동하는 전자 제어 유닛, 및 전자 제어 유닛의 제어에 의하여 운전자에게 자동차와 보행자의 충돌을 알리도록 작동하는 경보부를 포함하고, 전방 감지 센서는, 자동차 전방의 이미지를 획득하는 이미지 입력부, 이미지 내 물체의 크기에 대응하는 관심영역(ROI: Region Of Interest)를 설정하는 ROI 설정부, 설정된 ROI에서 물체의 동작에 기반하여 보행자 후보를 추출하는 후보 추출부, 및 데이터 베이스를 포함하고, 추출된 보행자 후보를 데이터 베이스 내 표본 보행자의 자세와 비교하여 보행자에 해당하는지 식별하는 보행자 판단부를 포함하며, PDCMS 기능은 경보부의 작동, 및 운전자의 브레이크 작동 여부와 관계없는 브레이크의 작동 활성화를 포함하는 자동차의 PDCMS 작동 장치를 제공한다.
