The present invention relates to a device for recognizing a parking lot and to a control method thereof, wherein an actual parking lot can be secured accurately by recognizing the surrounding targets of the parking space as columns if a second echo signal determined among echo signals having responded to transmitted signals transmitted through a supersonic sensor is in a double-echo condition in which the second echo signal is as twice distant as a first echo signal. According to an embodiment of the present invention, provided is a device for recognizing a parking space, which recognizes a parking space based on transmitted and received signals transmitted and received through a supersonic sensor installed on a vehicle, comprising: a receiving part for receiving an echo signal responding to a transmitted signal transmitted to the vicinity of a parking space in which to park a vehicle through the supersonic sensor; a calculation part for calculating a first distance from a surrounding target of the parking space based on a first echo signal, which is the first echo signal to pass a predetermined reference value among the received echo signals, and calculating a second distance from the surrounding target of the parking space based on a second echo signal, which is the second echo signal to pass the reference value; and a parkability determining part for determining whether or not the calculated second distance is in a double-echo condition in which the second distance is twice the first distance, recognizing the surrounding target of the parking space as a column or a parked vehicle depending on the result of the determination and determining parkability based on the result of the recognition.

    본 발명은 초음파 센서를 통하여 송신된 송신신호에 응답한 에코신호들 중 결정된 제 2 에코신호가 제 1 에코신호의 두배거리인 더블에코조건이면 주차공간의 주변타겟을 기둥으로 인식함으로써 실제 주차가능공간을 정확하게 확보할 수 있도록 주차공간 인식장치 및 그의 제어방법에 관한 것이다. 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따르면, 차량에 설치된 초음파 센서를 통하여 송수신되는 송수신신호에 근거하여 주차공간을 인식하는 주차공간 인식장치에 있어서, 상기 초음파센서를 통하여 주차하고자 하는 주차공간의 주변에 송신된 송신신호에 응답하는 에코신호를 수신하는 수신부; 상기 수신된 에코신호 중에서 미리 설정된 기준치를 통과하는 첫번째 에코신호인 제 1 에코신호에 근거하여 상기 주차공간의 주변타겟과의 제 1 거리를 계산하고 상기 기준치를 통과하는 두번째 에코신호인 제 2 에코신호에 근거하여 상기 주차공간의 주변타겟과의 제 2 거리를 계산하는 계산부; 및 상기 계산된 제 2 거리가 상기 제 1 거리의 두배거리인 더블에코조건인지 여부를 판단하여 그 판단결과에 따라 상기 주차공간의 주변타겟을 기둥 또는 주차된 차량으로 구분하여 인식하고, 그 인식결과에 근거하여 주차가능공간을 결정하는 주차가능공간 결정부를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 주차공간 인식장치가 제공된다.
