To make it possible to give preferable driving assist in the event that a vehicle is traveling on a narrow road where there is a difficulty in passing an oncoming vehicle.SOLUTION: A road recognition device 50 includes a camera 21 that detects an outside world situation around an own vehicle, a map generation unit 25 that generates a map of the periphery of the own vehicle on the basis of information on the outside world situation, a passing-oncoming vehicle determination unit 27 that determines based on information on the outside world situation whether a road on which the own vehicle is traveling is a specific road devoid of a center line which differentiates an own lane from an oncoming lane, and that, when it is determined that the road is the specific road, determines whether the own vehicle can pass an oncoming vehicle, and an information appending unit 28 that appends passing-oncoming vehicle information, which depends on a result of the determination made by the passing-oncoming vehicle determination unit 27, to map information generated by the map generation unit 25.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
