To provide a cargo handling assist device and a method for controlling the cargo handling assist device that improves operability according to the condition of a cargo.SOLUTION: A cargo handling assist device 1 includes a locking section 6, a lifting operation section 16, a motor section 11, a weight detection section 12, and a control section 10 to assist in lifting and lowering a cargo 7. The locking section 6 locks the cargo 7. The lifting operation section 16 raises and lowers the locking section 6 by winding a sling that connects the locking section 6. The motor section 11 drives the lifting operation section 16. The weight detection section 12 detects the weight value applied to the lifting operation section 16 and transmits it to the control section 10. The control section 10 has control means that calculates a control value using the amount of change in the weight value received from the weight detection section 12 to control the lifting and lowering of at least one of the locking section 6 and the cargo 7 based on this control value.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
