To provide a failure detection method capable of detecting a rudder failure of an underwater traveling vehicle with an excellent detecting ability.SOLUTION: A failure detection method of one aspect includes a first step, a second step, and a third step. The first step measures a roll angle of an underwater traveling vehicle traveling with a specific pitch angle and a specific yaw angle under a test environment where the normality of multiple rudders is confirmed, the second step measures the roll angle of the underwater traveling vehicle traveling with the specific pitch angle and the specific yaw angle under an operational environment where the normality of multiple rudders is unconfirmed, and the third step detects one rudder failure of multiple rudders based on the difference between the roll angle of the underwater traveling vehicle measured under the test environment and the roll angle of the underwater traveling vehicle measured under the operational environment.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
