To provide a traffic light recognition method for accurately recognizing lighting of an arrow of a traffic light, and a traffic light recognition apparatus.SOLUTION: A controller 30 for processing a forward image of a vehicle detects a lighting direction of an arrow of a traffic light existing in the image and a lighting position of the arrow in the image, and sets a reference area where red light of the traffic light should exist, in the image, on the basis of the lighting direction and position of the arrow. The controller 30 determines whether the red light exists in the reference area, and recognizes the detected lighting direction of the arrow, as an indication of the traffic light ahead of the vehicle, when a determination is made that the red light exists in the reference area.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
