To provide a monitoring apparatus which reduces the frequency of false detection without reducing the performance of detecting a person.SOLUTION: A surroundings monitoring apparatus 20 being a monitoring apparatus includes: an image receiving unit 46 which receives an image of surroundings of a vehicle; a person detection unit 48 which detects a person in the image received by the image receiving unit 46; and a detection result output unit 50 which outputs a detection result of the person detection unit 48. The surroundings monitoring apparatus 20 receives, in a learning mode, an image captured when no one exists in a specific area based on a designation by a user, stores, when a person is detected from the image, data on characteristics of a falsely detected object which has been detected as the person, and determines, when the vehicle is located in the specific area and when an object in the image of the specific area is detected as a person and the characteristics thereof are similar to the characteristics of the false detected object stored in advance, that the detected object is not a person.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2

    【課題】人を検知する性能を低下させずに、誤検出頻度を低減する監視装置を提供する。【解決手段】監視装置としての周辺監視装置20は、車両の周辺を映した画像を受け付ける画像受付部46と、画像受付部46により受け付けられた画像に映る人を検知する人検知部48と、人検知部48による検知結果を出力する検知結果出力部50とを備える。周辺監視装置20は、学習モードにおいて、ユーザの指定に基づく特定エリアに人が存在しない状況で撮像された画像を受け付け、その画像から人を検知した場合、人として検知した物体を誤検知物としてその特徴に関するデータを記憶し、車両が特定エリアにあるとき、特定エリアの画像に映る物体を人として検知した場合であって、かつ、その物体の特徴が予め記憶した誤検知物の特徴に類似する場合、検知した物体は人でないと判定する。【選択図】図2
