To provide a drive support device which can properly secure an inter-vehicle distance from a preceding vehicle without performing unnecessary abrupt deceleration, and a drive support method.SOLUTION: A drive support device 30 has; an inter-vehicle distance detection part 32 for detecting an inter-vehicle distance from an own vehicle 1 up to a preceding vehicle; a speed detection part 33b for detecting a speed of the preceding vehicle; a deceleration detection part 33a for detecting the deceleration of the preceding vehicle; a preceding vehicle brake distance estimation part 34 for estimating a brake distance of the preceding vehicle on the basis of the detected speed and deceleration; a target brake distance calculation part 35 for calculating a target brake distance of the own vehicle 1 on the basis of the inter-vehicle distance up to the preceding vehicle, and the brake distance of the preceding vehicle; and a brake control part 36 for controlling a brake of the own vehicle 1 on the basis of the target brake distance.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
