To provide a rotation detection device capable of detecting a failure at the time of non-rotation operation.SOLUTION: A rotation detection device 1 includes a rotation operation unit 2 that accepts rotation operations, a light emitting unit 3 that outputs light, a light receiving unit 4 that is arranged so as to face the light emitting unit 3 and receives light, a transmission unit 26 that is provided in the rotation operation unit 2 so as to move between the light emitting unit 3 and the light receiving unit 4 in accordance with the rotation operation and transmits light, a switching unit 28 that is provided in the rotation operation unit 2 adjacent to the transmission unit 26, faces the light emitting unit 3 and the light receiving unit 4 during the non-rotation operation of the rotation operation unit 2, transmits light during the non-rotation operation, and blocks light during the rotation operation to switch the light transmittance, and a control unit 10 that controls the light transmittance of the switching unit 28, and determines that a failures occurs in at least one of the light emitting unit 3, the light receiving unit 4, and the switching unit 28 when the light receiving unit 4 does not receive the light of the light emitting unit 3 during the non-rotation operation.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
