To obtain a modified conjugated diene polymer capable of obtaining a rubber composition having an appropriately high Mooney viscosity and good processability, and capable of obtaining a crosslinked product exhibiting excellent low heat generation property.SOLUTION: A modified conjugated diene polymer is produced by a method including the steps of: polymerizing a monomer containing a conjugated diene compound in the presence of a metal amide compound obtained by mixing an alkali metal compound or an alkaline earth metal compound with an (A) compound to obtain a conjugated diene polymer having an active terminal; and reacting the conjugated diene polymer having an active terminal with a compound represented by formula (1). The (A) compound has: at least one nitrogen-containing group selected from the group consisting of a protected secondary amino group and a protected tertiary amino group; and one secondary amino group.SELECTED DRAWING: None
