To provide a closed cross-sectional structure that can suppress peeling of a flange connection surface even in a case where compressive force or bending deformation is applied in an axial direction, without making a flange into a special shape so as to facilitate press molding, spot welding and connection with another member.SOLUTION: A closed cross-sectional structure is configured such that a first hat-shaped member having a first flange and a second hat-shaped member having a second flange are joined via the first flange and the second flange, wherein a maximum flat surface width of the closed cross-sectional structure is larger than an effective width calculated from Karman's effective width formula.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
