To provide an overturning prevention device for a rail traveling machine and an overturning prevention mechanism for the rail traveling machine capable of stable traveling while preventing derailment or overturning.SOLUTION: An overturning prevention device 10 for a rail traveling machine traveling on a rail R by a wheel 3 is composed of: a supporting unit 20 having a pair of arms 21, 21 provided with claw units 22 on their tips to be hung on a head unit RW of the rail R; and a supporting unit coupling unit 30 for attaching the supporting unit 20 to a traveling unit 2 of the rail traveling machine. The pair of arms 21, 21 are coupled so that the pair of arms 21, 21 can be swayed together with each other in between a first end unit and a second end unit, and the supporting unit 20 includes a retaining mechanism 25 for retaining so that a distance between the claw units 22 of the pair of arms 21, 21 is variable.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
