To provide a vehicle periphery monitoring device and a method for coping with change of a peripheral landform in travel by a vehicle.SOLUTION: A vehicle periphery monitoring device 100 comprises: a plurality of sound sensors 102 which are arranged on different positions on a vehicle, collect a sound from a periphery for generating sound collection data; an acoustic signal processing part 110 for receiving the sound collection data, detecting a target sound indicating a peripheral vehicle and a generation position thereof on the basis of the sound collection data, for generating peripheral vehicle position data; and a selection part 108 for receiving peripheral landform data indicating a landform of the periphery of the vehicle, and selecting a sound reflection body arrangement model according to the peripheral landform data from a plurality of sound reflection body arrangement models, in which the sound reflection body arrangement models indicate arrangement of a sound reflection body related to a different landform, respectively. The acoustic signal processing part 110 detects a generation position of the target sound on the selected sound reflection body arrangement model.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
