To shorten the data length of a signal transmitted by communication between an in-vehicle unit and a portable device.SOLUTION: A portable device 3 includes a transmission unit 39 that transmits an operation start notification signal OS for specifying the transmission timing of a burst signal BS to an in-vehicle device 1, an intensity measurement unit 38 that measures the intensity of the burst signal BS transmitted from the in-vehicle device 1 according to the operation start notification signal OS, and a control unit 35 that determines the establishment of communication between the in-vehicle device 1 and the portable device 3 when the intensity measuring unit 38 measures the intensity equal to or greater than a threshold at the transmission timing. The in-vehicle device 1 includes a transmission unit 13 that transmits the burst signal BS at the transmission timing to the portable device 3 based on the operation start notification signal OS received from the portable device 3.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
