To provide an eddy current type deceleration device in which occurrence of a braking force to a rotor is suppressed in a non-braking state.SOLUTION: The eddy current type deceleration device comprises a rotor, a plurality of permanent magnets, a plurality of pole pieces disposed between the rotor and the plurality of permanent magnets, a stator supporting the plurality of permanent magnets and the plurality of pole pieces, a drive unit that is connected to either the plurality of pole pieces or the plurality of permanent magnets and that switches the positional relationship, about the rotation axis, between the plurality of permanent magnets and the plurality of pole pieces to a braking state and a non-braking state, and a control unit that controls the drive unit. After switching the positional relationship, about the rotation axis, between the plurality of permanent magnets and the plurality of pole pieces to the non-braking state from the braking state, the control unit holds the positional relationship in this state, and then, cancels holding of the positional relationship.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
