PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the decrease in the efficiency in a high-speed rotation area in a rotary electric machine arranged to perform a variable-speed driving operation according to low-speed rotation to high-speed rotation.SOLUTION: A permanent magnet comprises a composition represented by the following composition formula: RFeMCuCo. The permanent magnet has crystal grains including a matrix and grain boundary phases. The matrix has: cell phases having ThZntype crystal phases; cell-wall phases parting the cell phases from one another; and a plurality of Cu high-concentration phases. The areal percentage of the plurality of Cu high-concentration phases to the matrix is 0.2% or more and 5.0% or less. Within a circle of 3-μm radius centered around a mass center of at least one Cu high-concentration phase of the plurality of Cu high-concentration phases, other Cu high-concentration phases of which the number is 3 to 15 on average are distributed.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
