PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid that a driver feels an incongruity and uneasiness when the other vehicle which is higher than an own vehicle in a vehicle speed interrupts during inter-vehicle distance control with a preceding vehicle.SOLUTION: An inter-vehicle distance between a preceding vehicle and an own vehicle is controlled so as to obtain a target headway time. In this inter-vehicle distance control method, when the other vehicle interrupts between the preceding vehicle and the own vehicle during the inter-vehicle distance control, when a vehicle speed of the interrupting vehicle is higher than a vehicle speed of the own vehicle, the acceleration of the own vehicle is not permitted for a prescribed time after the occurrence of the interruption. That is, a target headway time profile after the occurrence of the interruption is calculated so as to secure a constant vehicle speed time (time t1 to time t2 in Fig. 5) for maintaining the vehicle speed of the own vehicle before the occurrence of the interruption.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5

    【課題】先行車との車間距離制御中、車速が自車より高い他車の割り込みがあったとき、ドライバーに違和感や不安感を与えないこと。【解決手段】先行車と自車との車間距離を目標車頭時間になるように制御する。この車間距離制御方法において、車間距離の制御中、先行車と自車の間に他の車両が割り込んできたとき、割り込み車の車速が自車の車速よりも高い場合は、割り込み発生から所定時間の間、自車の加速を許可しない。即ち、割り込み発生前の自車の車速を維持する一定車速時間(図5の時刻t1〜時刻t2)を確保するように、割り込み発生からの目標車頭時間プロファイルを算出する。【選択図】図5
