PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly determine the possibility of collision with a following vehicle at the time of lane change.SOLUTION: A monitoring device 10 for monitoring a situation of an area around a vehicle comprises: setting means (arithmetic processing unit 13) for, when a self vehicle travels on a curved road, setting a detection area corresponding to a lane shape for detecting another vehicle, travelling behind the self vehicle, on a lane adjacent to a lane on which the self vehicle travels; detection means (another vehicle detection unit 11) for detecting another vehicle travelling in the detection area set by the setting means; sensing means (arithmetic processing unit 13) for sensing a position and speed of another vehicle detected by the detection means; and determination means (arithmetic processing unit 13) for determining the possibility of collision in the case where the self vehicle changed the lane with reference to the position and speed of another vehicle sensed by the sensing means.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
