PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus capable of providing an assistive closing force without an undesirable amount of added weight and automatically adjusting to variable load conditions.SOLUTION: The invention provides a method and apparatus for providing a closing force. The apparatus comprises a stowage shelf, a prescribed number of sensors that measure a prescribed number of forces on the stowage shelf, an assist mechanism that provides a closing force, a controller that compares data from the prescribed number of sensors, and an adjustment mechanism that adjusts the closing force on the basis of the data from the prescribed number of sensors. The assist mechanism has a mechanical advantage that changes to provide the closing force.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
