A method of payment for charging a battery 6 of a vehicle 1. A charging connection 3,8 is established between a charging station 2 and a vehicle 1. A first communication channel between a vehicle charging controller 4 and a charging station charging controller 7 and a second communication channel between a payment controller (21, fig 2) in the vehicle and an access controller (22, fig 2) in the charging station are both established over the charging connection. After this, a payment transaction is established over the second communication channel between the payment controller acting as a card-based payment device and the access controller acting as a payment terminal. The access controller then provides the established payment transaction for authorization through a payment network. Preferably, the first communication channel adopts the ISO 15118 standard and the first and second channels share at least a physical layer and a data link layer. Card-based open payment can therefore be performed using a plug and charge model. A suitable charging station and electric vehicle are also described.
