Uncommanded or uncontrollable high thrust in a gas turbine engine with a pump 202 is mitigated by opening a spill valve 210 in response to a flow rate, determined based on a sensed pressure differential across a pressure valve 206, exceeding a demand flow rate. In a first embodiment a primary spill valve is located downstream of the pump; the pressure valve controls fuel pressure, and determining the flow rate also involves a pressure valve opening position. In a second embodiment a system 200 has, in fluid flow order, a fuel tank, the pump, a metering valve 224, the pressure valve, and a combustor receiving fuel from the fuel tank. The spill valve is downstream of the pump, spilling additional flow. In a third embodiment the demand flow rate corresponds to engine thrust demand. A metering valve controls combustor fuel flow, and combustor fuel pressure is controlled by the pressure valve between the metering valve and combustor. The determined flow rate is compared with the demand flow rate and feedback of the pressure valve opening using an inductive probe 207.
