An ETCS design is installed on a railway 20 to overlay an existing signalling system. Timestamped data is logged on a train 31 and at a trackside train detection system (e.g. track circuit, axle counter or interlocking (6,Fig.1)). Data logged by the train indicates time of detection, identity and location of multiple balises 25-30, and is analysed to determine the distance between them. Data logged by the trackside system indicates the time when the front of the train passed through a track section boundary T1-T3. Data logged by the train and trackside system are correlated based on the timestamps and used to determine the location of each balise relative to a track section boundary. If the inter-balise distance and the relative locations are within expected tolerances of the ETCS design, then that design is verified. The train may be ETCS-compliant. It may additionally log accelerometer and elevation data and use this to verify track gradient and geometry data from the balises.
