Trains 105, 106 travelling along a railway track 102, 103, 124 are scheduled by obtaining stop data representing parameters relevant to a time period for the train to stop at a platform 107, 108 and using it to compute a dwell time for the train to stop at the platform. Data for scheduling the train is generated using the computed dwell time and a signal representing the generated schedule data is output. The stop data may be the presence, number or locations of passengers on the platform or in a train compartment, determined from image data received from cameras 113, 120; data received from the train representing its mass; or data representing a weather condition relevant to the platform. The schedule data may be generated based on a determination that the position of the train meets position criteria. A scheduling system may thus predict a time required for passengers to disembark and embark and schedule the train accordingly.
