A mobile electric vehicle (EV) charging unit 1 includes a platform 2 carrying a payload, which includes an electrical storage accumulator (e.g., battery) for charging an EV. A plurality of wheels (e.g., mecanum wheels) 10-13 are driven (e.g., via electric motors) to move the platform along a surface. Plural outriggers 3,4 connect the wheels to the platform and are angularly movable, relative to the platform, to raise and lower the platform, relative to the surface. A control unit 6 provides manual control of charging unit movement, and is connected to the platform by a flexible cable 5 incorporating a breakaway connector 7 that immobilises the charging unit when electrical signals between the control unit and the platform are interrupted by separation of the connector. First and second planar outriggers are joined to front and rear ends of the platform by hinge connections enabling independent angular movement between the respective outrigger and the platform. The breakaway connector may have two, magnetically connected parts; one part incorporating pins which connect with contact pads on the other part. The charging unit may include collision avoidance sensors and may have a memory storing a negotiable route from a storage position to an EV.
