A method of balancing a boat paddle having two blades 30, 40, which are connected together by a shaft 20 and which each have a centre of gravity offset from a longitudinal axis 21 of the shaft in a direction away from a water entry edge 33 or 43 of that blade 30 or 40, comprises the step of equipping the shaft, between the blades, with a weight 50 acting eccentrically with respect to the shaft longitudinal axis to exert on the paddle when the axis is horizontal a turning moment about that axis. The weight is positioned in a rotational position with respect to the shaft axis so that the turning moment acts in opposition to the gravitational effect of the centres of gravity of the blades to allow the paddle to assume a state of equilibrium in any rotational orientation of the paddle about the shaft longitudinal axis when the axis is horizontal. A boat paddle for use in the method and a weight adapted for balancing a paddle are also disclosed.
