A lid 100 is removably attachable to a portable traffic signal system (600,Fig.9). It comprises a base 102; a solar charging module 104 on the base; and a security frame which surrounds the solar charging module and base and secures them as an integral unit. The solar panel may be flexible or comprise monocrystalline solar cells. The lid also has a lock (e.g. bullet lock) for securing it to the traffic signal system within an aperture thereof. The lock has a first and second configuration in which a laterally extending protrusion 108 respectively does and does not extend beyond a perimeter of the lid. Manually actuated means (e.g. a key) extend and retract the lock between the configurations. Additionally, manufacturing a lid for a portable traffic signal comprises providing a security frame over a solar charging module on a base. Additionally, manufacturing a portable traffic signal comprises providing a housing and solar power system (comprising control means) by positioning the control means in the housing and a lid over the housing.
