A portable sensing device 200 for determining at least one stability metric of a vessel comprises one or more motion sensors 212 for sensing motion data of the vessel and a computing system 214 for processing motion data from the one or more motion sensors to determine a roll period of the vessel. The computing system is programmed to produce an indication of the roll period of the vessel after the sensing device has been operating for a period of time, ascertain the precision or accuracy of the roll period and determine the at least one stability metric of the vessel from the roll period. A method of using the portable sensing device is disclosed as is a computer readable medium that carries out said method and a system that incorporates the portable sensing device.
