A lung demand regulator 100 for a breathing apparatus including a mask comprises a flow regulation mechanism 120 having a closed configuration where e.g. a seal 126 contacts a seat 128 and a connection mechanism e.g., press release elements (140, Fig. 3B) for releasably connecting the demand regulator to a face mask. A lockout mechanism 105 locks the flow regulation mechanism in the closed configuration to automatically minimise gas loss on disconnection of the regulator from the mask. The lockout mechanism may comprise a lockout lever 190 pivoted 196 to engage a bistable diaphragm retention lever 160 which bears on a pressure differential diaphragm 106 following regulation lever. The lockout is activated by movement of at least one release element being translated to the lockout mechanism via a cam element (146, Fig. 3B) and cam follower 154 on linearly moving lockout actuator 150. The lockout may be automatically deactivated by inhalation acting on the diaphragm. Also disclosed is a face mask comprising a lung demand regulator and a breathing apparatus comprising the demand regulator.
