A windspeed monitoring system comprises a first area in which aircraft or boats are to take off, land or navigate (e.g. a runway 10) and multiple environmental windspeed sensors (e.g. anemometers) 16 located in an area of surrounding terrain 20 bordering the first area. Some sensors are distributed closely adjacent an edge of the first area and some are spaced from it – e.g. in a square or hexagonal lattice, matrix or grid. Windspeed data from the sensors is interpolated to estimate areas (25 and gust 27) where the windspeed exceeds a predetermined limit, e.g. by estimating the positions of multiple isotach lines 18 for respective windspeeds. Said windspeed areas are output, e.g. colour-coded and overlaid on a map of the runway (Fig.2) which is displayed to a pilot. Flexible vertical elements (e.g. long-stemmed grasses or mats of vertical plastic filaments) may be interspersed between the sensors to visually indicate wind direction or windspeed.
