A method 100 of monitoring a mechanical connection between first and second aircraft components. The components are secured together using a securing device 104 and information indicative of an acoustic signal emitted during the securing process is obtained 106 and inputted into a machine learning model 108 which provides an output indicative of a fault condition of the mechanical connection. The machine learning model may comprise a classifier and/or a neural network and may be trained using training data 102 which comprises information indicative of a plurality of acoustic signals with known fault conditions. The information indicative of the acoustic signal may comprise a sound signature of an acoustic signal emitted by the securing device during securing the components, and the signature may comprise pitch and/or duration of the acoustic signal. A method of determining a characteristic of the connection comprises monitoring a property of the securing device and an acoustic signal emitted while securing the components and determining, based on the property of the securing device and the acoustic signal, whether inspection of the mechanical connection is required.
