A system for storing and releasing energy is provided. The system 100 comprises: a hydraulic jack 101 comprising a pumping piston 104 and a ram 106; an energy storing device 126 coupled to the ram 106, the energy storage device 126 comprising a drive piston 110; and an energy transfer device 114, 116 coupled to the drive piston 110. Movement of the pumping piston 104 is arranged to move the ram 106 from a first position to a second position. Movement of the ram 106 from the first position to the second position is arranged to move the drive piston 110 from a first position to a second position to charge the energy storing device 126. Upon release of the hydraulic jack 101, the energy storage device 126 is arranged to move the drive piston 110 linearly from the second position back to the first position to discharge the energy storage device 126. The energy transfer device 114, 116 is arranged to convert the linear motion of the drive piston 110 from the second position back to the first position into a rotary motion. Each of a scooter, a bicycle, a fan and a dynamo incorporating such a system are also disclosed.
