A method 200 and apparatus for selecting aircraft system components comprising providing a reliability evaluation function 202 that produces a reliability score for a given set of candidate components for the aircraft system, and a complexity evaluation function 204 that produces a complexity score representative of a complexity of installing a given set of candidate components for the aircraft system. A multi-objective optimisation function 206 is performed to determine at least one set of candidate components for the system that satisfy one or more conditions relating to at least one of the produced scores, wherein the optimisation function iteratively selects 208 a new set of candidate components for the system, performs at least one of the reliability or complexity functions to generate a reliability score and/or complexity score 210 for the candidate components, and evaluates at least one of these scores according to one of the conditions 212 for storing 214 the components based on the evaluation.
