A high-altitude pseudo satellite (HAPS) aircraft having aeroelastic span loaded fixed wing(s) 1, aspect ratio greater than 15, wing loading less than 6 kg/m², and spoilers 6’ distributed across the wing span. Each spoiler is located chordwise adjacent the wing pressure centre. Sensors (e.g. strain gauges, attitude and/or pressure sensors) allow a spoiler control system to determine at least one quantity selected from: lift, pitch and roll, bending and torsional strain at points or regions of the wing span, net speed and roll and pitch angle of the wing. The spoiler can be activated to reduce local lift in spoiler location in response to the determined quantities. The gust alleviation control system may reduce HAPS vulnerability to hazardous turbulence by activating particular individual spoilers in response to detecting hazardous errors while descending through the troposphere, reducing wing shape deformation. All spoilers may operate simultaneously for rapid descent mode. The aircraft may recharge from solar power while operating in stratosphere.
