A haptic input device 1 for use as a mechanical button simulator in vehicle interior surfaces. Including an input region 3, a force detection sensor 6, for detecting and registering force applied to input region 3 by user 2. A haptic stimuli generator 7 is provided, as well as a controller 5. Controller 5 controls haptic stimuli generator 7 to provide haptic feedback in response to the detection of force applied by user 2 providing it meets or exceeds an activation threshold. Controller 5 is configured to vary the haptic feedback strength over the duration of the input based on the force applied and according to a user adjustable simulated force-travel profile of a mechanical button. The input region 3 may comprise a vehicle interior surface. Haptic stimuli generators may include transcutaneous electrical nerve simulation (TENS), electrostatic feedback or vibrational feedback. A method is provided for controlling the haptic input device.
