Communication in an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) comprises an originating ITS station (ITS-S) 100 sending a collision warning Decentralised Environmental Notification message (DENM) in response to detecting a collision or risk of collision between two objection. The DENM includes a description of the originating ITS-S and two containers describing the two objects. A receiving ITS-S 151 receives the DENM and determines whether the receiving ITS-S corresponds to one of the two objects described in the DENM. A causeCode field of the DENM may be set to a Collision Risk or Accident value and a subCauseCode field may be set to a PreCrash value defining an imminent collision. Alternatively an originating ITS-S sends a first DENM which includes multiple containers describing multiple perceived objects and subsequently sends a second DENM including a link to the first DENM. A receiving ITS-S receives the first and second DENM, and processes an event notified by the second DENM using the containers of the first DENM.
