A method for calibrating a Digital Twin for an autonomous vehicle (i.e. road vehicle, aerial drone, underwater submersible) comprising creating 203 a model of the autonomous vehicle that defines one or more vehicle model parameters; defining 204 one or more simulation scenarios which define at least one test manoeuvre of the vehicle; executing 205 the simulation scenario(s); obtaining simulated data from simulated sensor(s) during the simulation scenario(s); comparing 206 the simulated data with real-world data logged 202 from corresponding sensor(s) on the vehicle during at least one real-world test manoeuvre corresponding to the simulation scenario(s); and applying 207 a machine learning algorithm to the comparison to calibrate 208 the one or more vehicle model parameters of the digital twin. Also provided are methods of using the calibrated Digital Twin to both tune a controller, navigation algorithms and/or guidance algorithms for an autonomous vehicle using machine learning, and to optimising a vehicle shape of an autonomous vehicle using machine learning.
