A method and a control system for maintaining multi-axle drive capability (four-wheel drive) in a vehicle, the method comprising: operating an internal combustion engine (202, fig. 1) to provide a torque to a first axle (220; fig. 1) of the vehicle, and to a first electric machine (216, fig. 1) to generate electrical power; controlling the generation of electrical power by the first electric machine in dependence on a requirement for torque at a second axle (224; fig. 1) of the vehicle; and operating a second electric machine (212; fig. 1) to receive the electrical power generated by the first electric machine and provide the torque to the second axle. The requirement for torque at the second axle may depend upon the available electrical power of the battery and/or the required torque split or distribution between the two axles. This may be in a terrain mode (e.g. off-road mode, dependent upon road surface).
