A control system for compensating for variable inertia in a vehicle powertrain, the control system features one or more controllers and is configured to determine weather a torque source is coupled to a wheel and apply a torque change (408) in dependence on an angular acceleration associated with the torque source. The system may feature a computer and a memory for said computer to receive commands. It may apply a torque change in combination with a torque request. It may comprise of one or more electric machines (MGU). The vehicle may have various operating modes i.e. HEV or EV and may have an internal combustion engine (ICE).
