A gyroscopic stabiliser 19 for stabilising the rolling or pitching motion of a marine vessel, wherein a gimbal 23 containing a flywheel (fig 1, 11) is rotatably supported (support portion 51) at least partly, preferably entirely, within a maximum width of the gimbal along the first axis (precession axis A) of the gyroscope stabiliser. The gimbal rotatably supports a flywheel along a second axis (vertical axis B). A damping mechanism is located at least in part within a maximum width of the gimbal along the first axis. The damping mechanism may also be located within a diameter of the flywheel. The maximum width of the gyroscopic stabiliser along the first and third (longitudinal direction C) axis is equal to the maximum width of the gimbal along the first and third axis respectively. The shape of the gimbal may correspond to the combined shape of the flywheel and flywheel shaft.
