An ultra-fast charging system, involving supercapacitor-to-capacitor charging for electric vehicles (EV) via a separate ultra-fast charging station 101, enables rapid charging of supercapacitor-based vehicle energy storage systems while minimising fluctuations in grid power demand and minimising the size of AC/DC converters needed. The EV includes a rechargeable accumulator unit 102 that has a control and monitoring unit 104 and a supercapacitor pack 113 to be charged. The charging station is connected to an electrical power grid 105 and includes: a control and monitoring unit 103; a supercapacitor pack 107; a voltage level selector 108; and an AC/DC converter 106 connected to the power grid to provide energy to the supercapacitor pack. The voltage level selector provides an output from the supercapacitor packs at different voltage levels. A charging connector unit 111 enables energy flow from the charging station to the vehicle accumulator unit. A method of implementing the ultra-fast charging system involves wirelessly transmitting vehicle data (e.g. vehicle position, speed, state-of charge (SOC)) from the accumulator unit to the charging station, whereupon the voltage level of the charging station supercapacitor pack is adjusted to provide a pre-determined charge profile to the vehicle supercapacitor pack.
